Nanoparticles drug delivery systems have great advantages including prolonged circulation time, enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, active targeting, and reduced side effects. Furthermore, the unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles such as optical, magnetic and thermal features enable simultaneous diagnosis and therapy (defined as “theranostics”). For instance, besides serving as drug carrier, iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles can also be used as hyperthermia agents and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast probes, due to the magnetocaloric effect and high molar relaxivity respectively (Figure 1).
