CT is an imaging technique based on the different absorption of X-ray by different compositions of the tissue. Small iodinated molecules are generally used as CT contrast agents. However, these contrast agents generally experience rapid renal excretion and allow very short time imaging.
To address these limitations, iodine-based nanoparticles are developed to increase the particle size and avoid renal filtration, such as nanoemulsions, liposomes, and polymeric nanoparticles. On the other hand, metallic nanoparticles have attracted much attention as CT contrast agents for the detection of cells and tissues due to their strong X-ray absorption ability. These nanoparticles include Au, Bi, Ta, Yb, etc. Facile surface modification of these nanoparticles with bioconjugates such as peptides, proteins, and antibodies make them attractive for target-specific imaging and molecular imaging.
