Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 2 to 20 nm. Due to the quantum confinement effect, they have unique optical properties, notably wide absorption and narrow emission spectra, the latter being tunable by changing the nanoparticle size. Particles passivated with inorganic shell structures are more robust than organically passivated dots and have greater tolerance to processing conditions necessary for incorporation into solid state structures. Some examples of core/shell quantum dots include CdS/CdSe, CdSe/CdS, CdS/ZnS, CdSe/ZnS, and etc. However, these luminescent QDs are prepared in organic solvents and are not suitable for biological application. So QDs need to be hydrophilic modified.

Multiplex western blot labelled by QDsOur quantum dots conjugates are made from a nano-particle (CdSSe) with a shell (ZnS) to improve the optical properties of the materials. These particles have an emission spectrum at 525 nm, 565 nm, 585 nm, 610 nm, 625 nm, or 655 nm. The colour of light emitted by quantum dots is dependent on the size of the particles, which can be from green to red. Quantum dots have significant advantages over common fluorophores in both sensitivity and stability. The fluorescence emitted by quantum dots can last as long as twenty days.
