Magnetic nanoparticles coated with gold add new properties (inertness, protection of the magnetic core against oxidation, optical properties) to those of the magnetic particles, without modifying their superparamagnetic behaviour. Gold shell is coated with citrate anions which can be displaced with a wide range of molecules containing a thiol (SH) group. Once functionalized, they can be employed as platforms for many applications such as target-specific drug delivery, biosensors, lateral flow tests, flow cytometry, cancer photothermal therapy. These particles have a mean shell thickness of 40 nm and a core diameter of 10 nm, the final size of gold coated magnetic particles is ~50nm.
