Absolute Mag™ Carboxyl Magnetic Particles, Ferromagnetic, Fluorescent Yellow, 4.0-4.9 μm (# WHM-S010) are prepared by either staining the polystyrene core of the particles with a solution of appropriate fluorophore or by polymerizing a fluorophore in styrene in the presence of polystyrene core particles. They can be used for covalent coupling of proteins or ligands or used as fluorescent tracers for cell surface markers in fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. In addition, chromium dioxide coated onto uniform polystyrene particles makes them retain magnetism once exposed to a magnetic field.

Application Notes
Ferromagnetic particles have been used for studying mechanotransduction across the cell surface and through the cytoskelaton. This is performed by binding them to cell surface receptors and applying mechanical stress directly to the receptor using a device to twist the magnetic particle.
